A small boy about the age of two was strapped to a women’s back as she ran out of a building with billions of dollars worth of gems. “What a good place to rob,” she said as the child had duck tape around its mouth. As the kid grew She taught him a bunch of tricks that she used for stealing and how there was one place that would blow up instead of being robbed. The wicked women taught her son how to defuse a bomb.
The kid was a pretty bright kid but didn’t know what he was learning would be dangerous. The woman would just lock him in a room days on end with no food or interaction. He could never say a word to her against anything she said, so he never told her that he sees color in left eye but black and white in the right. So the colored wires were tricky a points.
Finally when he was seven the woman took him on the toughest mission of his life. “The cake will set off if anything is out of place, it’s all trigger wires and pressure plates. You WILL get to the cake at the end of the hall and you WILL disarm it as fast as possible,” she ordered and tossed him down the hall when the guard bots has passed.
He found his way to the cake and it was the biggest cake he has ever seen, so complex and shinny. As he was distracted by the cake a guard bit came up behind him and shock him in the back of the head and the cake started to tick. Thinking fast with a blurry mind he returned the shock and the robot was down. The cake said0 5:23 and was getting lower. As he went to touch it the clock went right to 01:05. He jumped back with sparks covering his hands. He tried to cut the wire but he couldn’t see the colors. And then the clock went, 5, 4, 3… he headed to the exit.
The blast caught him and sent him flying. He hit the ground hard and was in a lot of pain, but a growl forced him to panic and get up. “You useless!” a female voice roared, “Just wait till I get my hands on you!” The boy tried to run but was caught in the rubble. He cried in pain as sharp nail dug into the beck of his leg, tearing into the mussel and kept digging until he was inches away from the woman with the fangs. He cried as she dug her nails into his back as she cussed at him, until he blacked out.
He woke to the movement of walking; he opened his eyes and looked up at the woman. “Good morning,” she smiled at him sweetly at him. The boy reached up and wrapped his arms around her neck in a hug. “It’s alright, I’m not mad,” she walked into an abandoned building and placed him on the floor with a backpack. “It’s okay dear,” she smoothed as the boy reached up to her and started crying, “Mommy is just going a trip, she’ll be back don’t worry. Who’s my boy?” she rubbed his hair with a soft voice. He pointed to himself and whipped tears away. “Wait for me.” She left and pulled her hood up with a twisted smile, “Good riddance,” she laughed as she left.
The boy waited for her till the age twelve. His leg that got torn up went numb and became useless as he waited over the years. He never left the building and survived on rodents he caught and rain water. ‘This is how life is supposed to be,’ he thought until the day his building got a visitor.
As he played with the bricks a noise sounded and he went to find out what it was. There were men walking around outside he was about to approach them to figure out if they knew where the women was, but hands went around his mouth and pulled him back into the shadows. He fought against the restraint until he gave up and eventually the men left. The hands let go and he was released. “Sorry, but I didn’t need them knowing anyone was here,” the voice of the hands said.
He turned around and saw another person about his age, “W...who are you? And how did you find me? Where did you come from? What are you doing here in my place?” he asked questions and the boy with dull green eyes sighed. “Answer me!!” The boy stood and as he did he fell over and was out. The boy watched from a safe distance till he woke up.
When the strange finally woke they talked for a bit and the stranger listened to the boy’s story and told him he had to leave. “If you want to survive you gotta leave this place, I don’t think she is coming back.”
“SHE WILL COME BACK SHE PROMISED!!”
He sighed, “It’s been almost ten years now, you really think she is coming back.” The words soaked into the boy and he started to cry and in a couple days he was ready to leave the thought of her behind as now he knew she had no intention of coming back for him. Leaving the old toys and clothes he was ready to leave. “I can carry you till we get to a safe house but then...” he trailed off.
“It’s okay; you’ll be tired and need to rest. I’ll get us food and water in return,” he replied to the dull green eyed boy, who smiled in response. “Ready when you are.”
“Let’s go,” he smiled and the boy got on his back and they ventured out into the sunlight. The boy from the dark building cringed in the light. “You okay?”
“Just gotta get used to it,” he smiled, “I’m Rick Bail by the way.”
“Rick Bail? How about with a new life you get a new name. Ricker Rider.”
“Huh?”
“Ricker has a better ring to it, don’t you think, and Rider for, the boy who took the world in his hands and is now setting out to ride the plains of freedom.”
He thought about it, “I like it! What’s your name?” the boy didn’t respond as he walked and Ricker fell asleep for once in the bright light.
When they reached a safe house the people gladly took them in for a while. Ricker found out that his friend’s name was Jace and when he was back to fully rested and wounds closed up his eyes were an eerie bright green that shone like cat eyes in the dark, leaving an odd twist in his gut. Ricker got more worried about Jace’s being around when they took in more lost children, and began teaching them when Jace would freak out and run out of the house and not return in days. But he did build a brace fro Ricker so he could walk on his own.
At the house Ricker and Jace became friends with a girl named Maian Kayan who ran away from home when her family was being split up. She was a nice young girl who told you what she was thinking, well for the most part. She really liked Jace but there was something she didn’t like.
Years passed and the house closed and. Ricker, Maian, and Jace left and headed out on their own as a group. Ricker learned how to drive a bike and Maian got car license, Jace was always jumpy at signing anything. Ricker got a shed for them to live in and Maian worked as a cab driver and lived from her car if she wasn’t with Ricker.
“Hey J,” Ricker walked up to where Jace wrapped a clothes in a bag, “You been quiet for the past couple days you okay?” He didn’t reply. “Jace?”
“I’m going away,” he said simply.
“What?! For how long?”
“I don’t know yet, but I’ll be back,” he stood and tossed the bag over his shoulder. “I promise you I’ll be back,” he smiled but he was sincere about it, “You gotta go home at some point. I’ll try to find work closer to home so I can come home. I can’t leave my brother all alone.”
“You’re the best,” they did their secret hand shake, “It’s always open to you.”
“Thanks, take care of Maian while I gone, keep her mouth out of trouble.”
“Will do!” he called after his friend as his dog stood at his side, “Come on Chi, lets but the shed together,” the dog barked and opened the box. ‘Come back soon but not to soon,’ he thought with Jace’s creepy green gaze burning in the back of his mind.
“I’ll help!” Maian ran up and gave him a hand.
I was alone once in my life but thanks to good friends, I found my place in the plain of freedom, as Ricker Rider.
